OUR PROGRAMS

AVOIDED DEFORESTATION AND FOREST DEGRADATION

The main activities of the projects would be focused on avoiding deforestation and forest degradation. This can be achieved primarily by obtaining a legal license to restore the area through ecosystem restoration license from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. Through this license, land clearing for mining and land conversion to palm oil plantations can be avoid- ed. REDD activities will bring about positive im- pacts to all communities and biodiversity bene- fits by maintaining the project area forest intact, and enhancing overall ecosystem services in the project zone.

RESTORATION AND REFORESTATION

Jaga Planet aims to reforest non-forest areas within the project areas. Two designs are applied in the reforestation program; communi- ty-led agroforestry and intensive reforestation. Saplings will be grown in on-site nurseries and regular maintenance will

FOREST PROTECTION AND LAW ENFORCEMENT

Protection and law enforcement activities will seek to prevent illegal exploitation of the project area, including illegal logging, poaching, encroachment, illegal mining and forest clearance with fire.

Working closely with military and forest police, and training local communities with our forest patrol program, the project will implement tight surveillance in most vulnerable areas. Signs and fences will also be placed in areas with access points.

FIRE PREVENTION AND SUPPRESSION

Prevention against illegal forest clearing and for- est fires are key in preventing further loss. Especially if the project areas are mapped to have hotspots. If the hotspots are shown to have a high risk of fire, the project will require building fire lookout towers around vulnerable areas, refinement of fire response procedure, and im- provement of fire detection technology.

SPECIES CONSERVATION AND HABITAT MANAGEMENT

Jaga Planet will work with species conservation organizations and research institutions to ensure the existing ecosystem continues to thrive under the project. The project will implement monitoring efforts on the population of rare endemic species, educational activities for the local communities. The projects will also aim to continue increasing public support through media exposure.

Community development and sustainable practices

Community development is one of the core priorities of Jaga Planet. The goal is to bring substantial benefits to the communities within and around the project-zone, through sustainable economic development and land use. Activities that will be conducted include the development of non-timber forest products, agroforestry, ecotourism, and sustainable fisheries.

Working closely with the local government, we strive to improve access to public services and assist the local government in providing health education at the grassroots level. The project also aims to support the local government’s efforts to improve the quality of basic education and the number of enrollment, and encourage the youth to pursue higher education. Capacity building and educational workshops for teachers will be conducted as well, through various training programs.

Jaga Planet will also ensure that the local government strictly implements land regulations to prevent further expansion of permanent settlements in the project zone. This must be done with caution to prevent conflict with local communities.
